Priscilla Movie Review

Last Thursday at Aras Inis Gluaire Belmullet, they screened director and screen writer Sofia Coppola's biographical movie, 'Priscilla'. The movie tells the tale of Priscilla Beaulieu, who through loving Elvis Presley had everything and nothing all at the same time. A tale of isolation, lonliness and the dark side of what seemed to be a fairytale. The lead roles were played by Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla) and Jacob Elordi (Elvis). I thought Spaeny did a fantastic job at portraying Priscilla's innocence when she first met Elvis and Elordi also impressed as a much darker Elvis to what viewers are used to seeing. The movie itself is based on Priscilla's memoir 'Elvis and Me'. This is her story of what life was like with the King of Rock'n'Roll and it does not portray him in a good light. Spoiled, misogynistic, psychologically abusive and deviant are words that come to mind when you ask me to describe the man I seen on screen. Priscilla did everything to t

A Proper Pint: McDonnells Bar and Undertakers Review

The experts say that emotional storytelling is a powerful way to connect with your audience and this documentary certainly succeeded in doing so. 'A Proper Pint' draws on so many emotions such as nostalgia as you listen to tales of years gone by, a sense of pride for the breathtaking and picturesque part of North Mayo where we are so lucky to call home, fascination at all the interesting facts that you learn about the area that you may not have known and of course an abundance of happy and sad memories of the times the McDonnell family have touched each and every one of our lives, be it a celebration in the bar or helping families with their loved ones journey home. This documentary is special and it even has a cameo by a very recognisable feline friend 😸😸😸 Even if you are not from Erris, this documentary tells its story in such a way that you will feel that you have already been welcomed into the pub, heard a song on the Irish pipes and had a nice chat with the locals!! Ticket to Paradise Review

The audience for movie night at Aras Inis Gluaire is growing by the week. This week's screening was Ticket to Paradise starring George Clooney and Julia Roberts. Now, I'm not the type to go 'Swooney over Clooney,' in fact, I don't really rate him at all, which is why I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this film. Clooney and Roberts play divorced couple David and Georgia, college sweethearts who got married way too early in their relationship and soon found out that there is a fine line between love and mistake. They had a daughter together who has had to spend her life as a referee between the ex-couple who irritate the hell out of each other. Now their daughter, Lily (Kaitlyn Dever) is about to make the same mistake they did by getting married to someone she has just met while on holiday on an island in Bali. Now the ex-couple must join forces to travel to Bali and sabotage their daughters wedding. This movie is reminiscent of a 90's rom-com set

Geraghty Boat Charters: Passing the Torch

If you have ever set sail from Blacksod Pier to explore the Inishkea Islands and Achill Island or if you have went on a sea angling adventure to Black Rock, then you most likely sailed with Captains Mattie and Josephine of Geraghty's Boat Charters, a family run business who are well known all along the Wild Atlantic Way. But now, after 31 years at the helm, the couple have decided to pass the torch to their successor, their son Jason, who along with his partner Katherine and daughters Maisie and Kitty, are set to lead Geraghty Boat Charters into the next chapter. Conveying sincere appreciation, Mattie and Josephine extend thanks to everyone who has been part of their remarkable journey. “We wish to thank each and everyone who supported us, sailed with us, helped us, and skippered for us during the last 30 years. The community's support and the memories created will always be remembered in Geraghty Charters history.”               Locals celebrate the launch of Geraghty's Bo

Oppenheimer Review

Oppenheimer is a biographical film telling the tale of theoretical physicist, J.Robert Oppenheimer, 'The Father of the Atomic Bomb' . The movie was written and directed by Christopher Nolan (Interstellar, Inception, The Dark Knight) and stars Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Junior, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Josh Hartnett, Casey Affleck, Rami Malek and Kenneth Branagh.  Oppenheimer is Jewish, with ties to communism and when nuclear fission is first discovered in 1938, he fears the Germans will use this to develop a fission bomb for the Nazi's. U.S. Army Colonel, Leslie Groves, recruits Oppenheimer as the director of the Manhatton Project to develop an atomic bomb.  When president Truman orders the atomic bombings on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Oppenheimer is haunted with the guilt of all the deaths caused by what he had helped develop and when he goes to see Truman to discourage further development of nuclear weapons he is just dismissed. Cillian Murphy was sensational in the rol

Friends Experience: The One in Dublin Review

My daughter and I having been watchinig Friends together since she was a ' Joey in the pouch', so it was an amazing experience to be able to spend her 18th birthday with her in Monica's apartment, Joey's apartment and Central Perk.  This was all thanks to The Friends Experience which will be in Parnell Square, Dublin until January 27th 2024. From the time you walk in the door of The Friends Experience you are in a maze of Friends memorabila, set replica's, photo oppertunities such as the 'PIVOT' scene and an awesome store with loads of Friends merchandise.  As you turn each corner your jaw just drops. When I seen Monica's apartment I just could not believe how accurate it was and I really felt like I was standing in the apartment I'd been watching on TV for the past 29 years.  Could it BE more accurate!!!!! The attention to detail that fans of the show would appreciate was very impressive. For example, they had Joey's copy of The Shining in

Wonka Movie Review

I'm the type of person who is very much in touch with my childhood. My pre teen years were the 1980's and what a magical time that was, the technology kids have to play with these days didn't exist and we relied on our imaginations for fun. We pretended we could fly, that we were superheros and of course magical powers were a must, so for us, a movie like Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory where you entered a world of pure imagination was a must watch every time it came on the telly, which was normally Christmas time, and every Christmas we watched it.  Now we get to revisit this magical world as Wonka has returned to the silver screen but this time its not a remake, its a prequel, where we get to learn some of the back story of the worlds greatest chocolate maker Willy Wonka. Directed by Paul King (Paddington), this heart warming musical is the perfect movie to bring the kids to over the holiday season. The movie starts with Wonka arriving in a victorian-esq town where
