A Proper Pint: McDonnells Bar and Undertakers Review

 



The experts say that emotional storytelling is a powerful way to connect with your audience and this documentary certainly succeeded in doing so. 'A Proper Pint' draws on so many emotions such as nostalgia as you listen to tales of years gone by, a sense of pride for the breathtaking and picturesque part of North Mayo where we are so lucky to call home, fascination at all the interesting facts that you learn about the area that you may not have known and of course an abundance of happy and sad memories of the times the McDonnell family have touched each and every one of our lives, be it a celebration in the bar or helping families with their loved ones journey home. This documentary is special and it even has a cameo by a very recognisable feline friend 😸😸😸

Even if you are not from Erris, this documentary tells its story in such a way that you will feel that you have already been welcomed into the pub, heard a song on the Irish pipes and had a nice chat with the locals!!




The man behind this superb documentary is Keven Siegert. Keven has been producing documentary films and video for more than thirty years. He is a recipient of the “Golden Raster” award for lifetime achievement in media production from the Health and Sciences Communication Association (HeSCA) and winner of multiple international film festivals. His strong Irish heritage led to the creation of the film series, “A Proper Pint” which promotes Celtic culture through the format of travel and historical documentaries. Keven also produces artistic projects in many mediums through his production company, Telepathic Stuntman and maintains an active blog promoting Creative Visualization.

A Proper Pint set out to convey the integral bond of the Irish Pub to the community around it and in it's exploration of this fact it brings you on a journey of Irish ethnicity, local lore, geographical peculiarities, trad music and lots of familiar faces.

The film will be shown in Erris over Mayo Day weekend, I will confirm location, day and time as soon as I have the confirmed details.

The other pubs featured in 'A Proper Pint' series include; O'Loclainn's Irish Whiskey Bar - Ballyvaughan, McLoughlin's Bar - Achill Island, Ma Murphy's Bar - Bantry and Sharkey’s Bar - Annagry.

Shocking scenes as 121 birds are rescued from horrific 'hoarding situation' in the Midlands

  IMAGE: ISPCA Parrot Rescue Ireland  are based in Sligo and they have taken on the care of a number of exotic birds who were recently rescued from 'a hoarding situation' in the Midlands. In total, 121 birds of various species including parrots, budgies, quail, parakeets, finches, cockateils and domestic hens were found in what the ISPCA has described as 'deplorable conditions'. When a member of the public reported their concerns to the ISPCA, a multi-agency operation was organised including, the gardai, the HSE and the National Parks and Wildlife Service. ISPCA Inspector Lyndsey Delaney detailed the horrific conditions to  The Journal  where she described how there was a build up of faeces, fly infestation, rotton food and the bird cages had cobwebs on them making it clear how neglected these birds were. Bangor Hibs Rise from the Ashes

Bangor Hibs soccor team were founded in February 1995. In their first year they took part in the Erris League and went on to win the Erris Shield. The following year they entered the Mayo League. They played in the second division for a few seasons, then they were promoted and made it to the Super League in 2008 but unfortunately only stayed there for one season. The team won their first trophy in 2006 when they defeated Partry in the Tonra Cup. Their most successful season was in 2011 when they won the Tuohy Cup, the Premier B League Cup and also received the Mayo Club of the Year Award. The team would also travel to England for the Brendan Conway Memorial Cup for a number of years in the early naughties.  The club had success with their underage teams. In 2000, the U12's team won the U12 Mayo Cup and within two weeks, the U16's also won the U16 Mayo Cup. The underage teams have remained but the senior team has been out of action since 2019.
