Wonka Movie Review

I'm the type of person who is very much in touch with my childhood. My pre teen years were the 1980's and what a magical time that was, the technology kids have to play with these days didn't exist and we relied on our imaginations for fun. We pretended we could fly, that we were superheros and of course magical powers were a must, so for us, a movie like Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory where you entered a world of pure imagination was a must watch every time it came on the telly, which was normally Christmas time, and every Christmas we watched it.

Now we get to revisit this magical world as Wonka has returned to the silver screen but this time its not a remake, its a prequel, where we get to learn some of the back story of the worlds greatest chocolate maker Willy Wonka. Directed by Paul King (Paddington), this heart warming musical is the perfect movie to bring the kids to over the holiday season.

The movie starts with Wonka arriving in a victorian-esq town where the worlds greatest chocolate is made, with the dream of opening a chocolate sweet shop. But, his dreams are quickly shattered as he meets a chocolatier cartel (Matt Lucas, Matthew Baynton, Paterson Joseph) determined to stop him in his tracks and the evil duo Scrubbit and Bleacher (played by Olivia Coleman and Tom Davies) who run an evil washer house empire and imprison Wonka, where he meets his new friends who help him in his plight.

Timothee Chalamet is superb as Willy Wonka. Before watching the movie I thought there is no way anyone can match Gene Wilders performance but Chalamet proved me wrong. He plays the role with a wonderful charm, innocence and sincerity. Olivia Coleman who played Scrubbit, was like a villain straight out of a Dickensian world and was one of the standout roles for me, along with Hugh Grant as the original Oompa Loompa.

I loved the humour throughtout and there was some great new songs, writen by Neil Hannon of The Divine Comedy. They did not let the movie end though without treating us to Pure Imagination and I could not help but sing along to it.

Wonka is a magical musical and I think we will be seeing more from our zanny friend as they still have not told us what happened that turned Wonka into someone who was quite happy to let greedy children be punished, so watch this space...................................

A Proper Pint: McDonnells Bar and Undertakers Review

The experts say that emotional storytelling is a powerful way to connect with your audience and this documentary certainly succeeded in doing so. 'A Proper Pint' draws on so many emotions such as nostalgia as you listen to tales of years gone by, a sense of pride for the breathtaking and picturesque part of North Mayo where we are so lucky to call home, fascination at all the interesting facts that you learn about the area that you may not have known and of course an abundance of happy and sad memories of the times the McDonnell family have touched each and every one of our lives, be it a celebration in the bar or helping families with their loved ones journey home. This documentary is special and it even has a cameo by a very recognisable feline friend 😸😸😸 Even if you are not from Erris, this documentary tells its story in such a way that you will feel that you have already been welcomed into the pub, heard a song on the Irish pipes and had a nice chat with the locals!! Shocking scenes as 121 birds are rescued from horrific 'hoarding situation' in the Midlands

IMAGE: ISPCA Parrot Rescue Ireland  are based in Sligo and they have taken on the care of a number of exotic birds who were recently rescued from 'a hoarding situation' in the Midlands. In total, 121 birds of various species including parrots, budgies, quail, parakeets, finches, cockateils and domestic hens were found in what the ISPCA has described as 'deplorable conditions'. When a member of the public reported their concerns to the ISPCA, a multi-agency operation was organised including, the gardai, the HSE and the National Parks and Wildlife Service. ISPCA Inspector Lyndsey Delaney detailed the horrific conditions to  The Journal  where she described how there was a build up of faeces, fly infestation, rotton food and the bird cages had cobwebs on them making it clear how neglected these birds were. They found birds who were already deceased and others who had beak damage, broken wings and severe feather loss. The premises had an absolutely appalling smell resulti

Bangor Hibs Rise from the Ashes

Bangor Hibs soccor team were founded in February 1995. In their first year they took part in the Erris League and went on to win the Erris Shield. The following year they entered the Mayo League. They played in the second division for a few seasons, then they were promoted and made it to the Super League in 2008 but unfortunately only stayed there for one season. The team won their first trophy in 2006 when they defeated Partry in the Tonra Cup. Their most successful season was in 2011 when they won the Tuohy Cup, the Premier B League Cup and also received the Mayo Club of the Year Award. The team would also travel to England for the Brendan Conway Memorial Cup for a number of years in the early naughties.  The club had success with their underage teams. In 2000, the U12's team won the U12 Mayo Cup and within two weeks, the U16's also won the U16 Mayo Cup. The underage teams have remained but the senior team has been out of action since 2019. Covid came, leagues were cancelled
